GETTING IT RIGHT
Some wildflower seeds require winter chilling, such as the cowslip. Some need spring temperatures to germinate such as the poppy to break their dormancy. This is why I think it is a good idea to sow the seed directly outside and let nature do the rest. If the conditions are right from the outset then the rest will be easy. Some of the best wildflower gardens have been created on rubble topped off with crushed chalk or crushed concrete.

Small meadows in gardens need cutting about 3 times per year, spring to 4inches, high summer to 4 inches and remove foliage and again in autumn, and rake everything up and scratch the earth.
large meadows, may if lucky get away with one cut,
new meadows however with annuals require only one cut in the first year as the annuals act as a nurse crop to protect seedlings
Its okay to scrape off topsoil, in small areas, but why recommend the expense for over 500 metres, better to sow a mixture for fertile soil, these plants grow taller to compeate with grass, all meadows improve soil, so the top soil will come back in time, it takes about 10 years.
wildflower seed should definitly not be mixed with grass seed for small gardens less than 2 acres.
the research was done in 1970's in England on chalk downland where the grass stops growing in summer, grasses attract butterflies,
in ireland, our research at the teagesc research station Oakpark, 1992 -1996 showed in Ireland grasses competed out the flora, however, 1.5grams of grass to 1.5 grams of wildflowers was best. if grass is needed not the 20% flora and 80% UK grass seed mix.
seed is germinated by sunlight, rake and roll the seed muxst be firm packed to the soil and the soil well rolled before and after sowing, before is best, then scratch the surface.
Gardeners can directly establish many species into a lawn, but it requires cutting to 4inches for two years, we establish flora like this all the time.
Prices vary, the price you quote is not for native Irish, cpuld you please explain the difference, your page visitors are phoning me and asking why we are dearer.
